Tortoise Or Hare; Winning is in the eye of the beholder!

Hello Friends!,

I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. St. Louis has been a real pressure cooker recently but we are down in the 80's this week and the weather has been beautiful. Enjoy the outdoors; it is one of the greatest gifts God has bestowed upon us!

I am 12 days out from the Montana Marathon and getting very excited about visiting this beautiful state. It is one of the few states in North America that I haven't yet visited. I won't be able to stay long, but will try to soak up all that it has to offer in the time I am there.

Today I did a 5 mile run. No frills, just me, my sneakers and the great outdoors. While I was running I saw a turtle just starting to cross the highway. This is a 4 lane road and gets quite a bit of traffic. Part of me wanted to pick the turtle up and point him back towards the woods, but I left him do what he was intending to do. I thought to myself that he will probably never make it across the road. A lot went through my mind as I thought about that turtle as I continued to run. The turtle was going as fast as he could because he was for whatever reason determined to get to the other side. I don't know how smart turtles are; maybe he just didn't know any better. There he was; moving as fast as he could and I was hoping he would not get squished as he crossed the 4 lane highway. About a dozen cars went by as I continued on my run. On my lap back I looked for the turtle with anxiety that he would not be smashed on the road. To my delight there was no smashed turtle. He had made it to the other side. He had made it to his finish line! I thought to myself as I finished my run how many types of runners there are; some very fast, some very slow. Some turtles, some rabbits. Those of us who do not win races, medals, ribbons or who do not get recognized as elite athletes are still winners! We run the race, give it everything we got and cross that finish line! That turtle; no matter how slow, was determined to get to the other side. With a little luck, determination and persistence; he accomplished his goal. God watched out for him and made his journey a successful one.

Never give up! Run your own race and be very proud of yourself that you are doing what ever exercise it is that you do. Self discipline is the biggest factor of what turns ordinary people into extraordinary people. Do what you need to do. Even when you don't want to do it; do it anyway. Whether the tortoise or the hare, be very proud of your accomplishments. Getting to the finish line makes you a true hero; It doesn't matter how or when you arrive, just get there!!!

Live and Love with all your heart and never look back!!

Always remember the 5 P's....Prior Preparation Prevents Poor Performance!!!

Happy Summertime Everyone!

I have 3 weeks before my marathon in Montana. I am very excited to enjoy this beautiful state and all it has to offer. Perhaps I will get some mountain biking or some fishing in while I am there!

This past Sunday I completed my 20 mile run. My last long run before the race. Yeeha! The weather was going to be hot so I new I had to start early. There were heat warnings for the day and the temperature predicted was in the high 90's. I rose at 3:30am and was out the door at 4:30. I do a 5 mile loop out and back to my house so that I can replenish my water, power gel and bananas. I prepare 1 water bottle for ever 5 miles. I also have a couple Tylenol handy just in case. Sometimes my old bones get stiff after 4 hours of running. :). I enjoyed my run and although it was tough to pull myself out of bed I was glad I got up early to beat the heat. I had 10 miles in before the sun came up and when it came up it was very proud to be out and showed all of it's glory. I remember from my reading that it is so very important to keep hydrated in a long run and especially a long run with the temperature in the 80's. "Drink early and drink often." Even when your not thirsty it is good to consume some water. I try to take a drink from my water bottle ever mile whether I think I need it or not. I have been told that if you really start to get thirsty then it is to late and dehydration is right around the corner. My sister Kay ran in the heat several years ago and did not properly hydrate. Before she finished her run she was throwing up and found herself in the hospital getting fluids intravenously. Be careful out there!!! When the weather gets in the high 70's and above you are losing an enormous amount of water. After 5 miles I look as though someone has poured a 5-gallon bucket of water on me. You need to drink a lot of water the day before, during the run and after the run. 160z every 5 miles has worked for me over the years. Know your body and how much you perspire and hydrate accordingly.

For all you marathon runners who have races coming up remember to start preparing at least 2 days before the race. This means relax, hydrate, carb-up and have your gear ready to go. Running is not complex. Who am I kidding...Would I be doing it...:) I will say that any little tip or trick you can pick up along the way will help get you to that finish line without any hiccups along the way. Plan, be smart and you will have an awesome experience!!!

Don't just dream it, Do it!!!

Happy Birthday to my little girl Katie!

Hello Friends and Family,

June 6th was my daughter Katie's Birthday. We had a great celebration at my Aunt Mary and Uncle Glenn's House. I unfortunately got there late because of a training course I was doing for my job. My Uncle has an awesome swimming pool and a stone 15 person hot tub that make a party into a GREAT PARTY!!! I know the kids certainly enjoyed all the amenities!

My daughter Katie shared her birthday with Grandma Arnold who was celebrating her 90th Birthday that day. We had all the food, beverages and desserts that you could ever imagine. No one left hungry or thirsty at all!!!

My little girl turned 11 years old. I can't believe how tall she is getting and she gets prettier every day! She just got a new haircut with bangs and now she is even more of a big girl. :) Katie's gets all A's in school and studies harder than anyone I know. She works hard to be the very best. She is an incredible piano player and you should see her on the basketball court. She is one of the smallest girls and can take the ball away from any girl on the other team. She is a tiger on the court and leaves everyone in the stands with their mouth open of how tough a little girl she really is. I couldn't ask for a more wonderful little girl. I am so very proud of her and how she conducts herself with her friends and her elders. I love to watch her tell stories with not only her voice, but her hands. I guess the thing that I love the most is when she comes into my office at home and sits on my lap to tell me what's going on in her day. She will always be my little girl no matter how old she gets. I hope I can always be the best Daddy possible for her. She deserves the very best! I love you Katie, I hope you had an awesome birthday!!! Always remember you can tell me anything and ask me anything! I am your Daddy and I love you with all my heart!!!

Love Daddy

God is everywhere! Let him give you strength!

Hello Sports fans!

I got up this morning at 4:00am to get in my 20 mile run. When I first went out to get the paper it looked like it was going to be a clear day. There were no stars in the sky so I was a little skeptical. After my bowl of oatmeal and my coffee, I strapped on my two friends and away we went for our 4 hour journey out into the night. How peaceful with no cars and nothing but me and all of Gods creatures of the night. As the sun started to rise I thought how beautiful it was that I could enjoy one of Gods many wonders. My run was going just fine. I had 10 miles in and I was clicking along just great. All of sudden the clouds turned black and the thunder started to roll in. Just another one of Gods many wonders. All at once it started thundering and lightening and raining extremely hard. I looked up in the sky and said to God, "Is that all you got!!! Come on, you can make it rain harder than that!!!" Just then it started to rain harder. I said out loud, "Come on, you can do better than that!!!" "I'm not given' up so let me see how hard you can really make it rain!!!" Some how it started to rain harder and the thunder and lightening continued. I couldn't get any more wet and I wasn't given up! I thought that the worst that could happen was I could get struck down by lightening. I was ready for God to take me if that should be his plan. It was him and me and all this incredible weather that he was bringing down. I was more motivated than ever to continue to run. My wife pulled up beside me in the car at some point in my run and told me to get in. I told her I had 5 miles left and I wasn't given up. She was worried but she knows my determination and knew I wasn't getting in that car. I ran by a house with a man standing in his garage watching the rain. He yelled out asking me if I needed a ride somewhere. I waved and said no thank you; I have 5 miles to go. Have a nice day I said as I continued to run by. I had 3 miles to go and the ran subsided and the thunder and lightning stopped. I thanked God for the challenge and the inspiration. God made me stronger. I successfully completed my 20 mile run and I will put this strength in my pocket to use it one day when the chips are down and I am not sure I can handle a challenge. Determination, motivation and persistence come in many flavors. Today God gave me a good dose of what I needed to help me not only on my run; but on life's difficult journey.

Sometimes when we are faced with the greatest of challenges, it is then and there that we acquire some of the best tools that will assist us for the rest of our life!!!

Embrace Gods challenges; Live Strong!!!

A Little Each Day! Life is truly a Marathon!!!

Hello Folks,

I am getting ready to run the Montana Marathon in less than 6 weeks. Today I ran 5miles and I have a few more small runs this week and a whopping 20 miler this weekend! A long time ago a friend told me that life is a marathon. I didn't know quite what it meant because maybe I was to young to understand. Everyday we are faced with challenges and opportunities. To give that extra smile, to make that extra phone call, spend that extra 15 minutes with our children and to make that extra sales call that will propel us ahead of the pack. We certainly can't do everything we want in one day. Even though we have great intentions, we cannot do all the goodness we want to do in one day. We cannot kiss our children as much as we want in one day and we cannot sell as much as we want in a lifetime in one day. Life is a marathon. We must do the necessary things every single day and then choose to do a little extra every day to make us feel good about what we have accomplished. Don't try to do it all in one day, but keep putting one foot in front of the other day after day and at the end of your life you will have run that incredible marathon called "your life".

My grandmother is turning 90 years old this weekend. She is one of the sharpest, funniest, kindest, religious and energetic people I know. She also in my opinion makes the world best red velvet cake!!! She drives her car to church, bingo, quilting and visits many friends and relatives. She once told me it is sad to see all your friends pass and sometime she wonders why she has been so lucky to live so long. She is a great person and has lived a good life and cares about people more than anyone I know. It is Gods blessing to the world to keep my grandma here for us all to learn from. My grandma has run a great life long marathon. She has figured it out more than most. It's not what you do just in one day, it is a compilation of the good things that you do each and everyday. Happy 90th Birthday Grandma! You are our hero! There isn't a medal for grandma's but my Grandma Arnold sure deserves one!!!

Run your life marathon! Make each step count and never give up!!!

Kurt
