What makes you do the things you do?!?!?!

Hello Folks,

What makes you smile? What makes you walk faster some days compared to others? What makes you put your hands over your head when you dance? What makes you hold the door open for a complete stranger? What makes you get out of bed early for no reason other than to get the most out of your day? What makes you want to do a cannon ball when you first get to the swimming pool! What makes you want to say; "Will you marry me?" We all have passion, some of us wear it on our sleeve, some of us are afraid to show it and some of us just keep it suppressed and are afraid to let it come out. Live your life with passion!!!! We all are getting older and one day the man upstairs will call us to be with him. We don't know when that day is so we must live the life we want and get the most out of it!!! Don't be afraid to go after what you want; you just might surprise yourself. Be true to yourself and be true to others and I am confident you will live a fruitful life!

I ran 11 miles this morning. I am not a fast runner and I averaged a 10 minute mile for 11 miles. I felt good about my run. I ate a bowl of oatmeal for breakfast and ended up eating 2 powergel packs to keep my blood sugar up to where I needed it to be. I finish my run with a 148 blood sugar! That was just super-fantastic for me!! When I got back to my house both of my kids were still sleeping. I ate some yogurt and a granola bar and took a shower and got ready for church. Yes, my kids were still sleeping.... I just have to smile because I remember the days when I was young and could sleep until 11 o'clock am. Soon will be the day when I recruit my daughter to run with me. For now, I will let her sleep and grow....

I just made my reservation last week for my upcoming run in Idaho. The race will take place in a small town called Ashton. The only place left to stay was a cabin at the Squirrel Creek Inn! STOP THE MADNESS!!! I asked if there was air conditioning and the answer was no. They did tell me that I could open the windows for some fresh air. :) I found another hotel about 15 minutes away that has a little more modern day conveniences. Trust me when I say I can rough it with the best of them but when I am needing my rest before and after a marathon, I will take all the luxury I can get!!! I know there are some fancy people out there that would concur that the Squirrel Creek Inn would not cut the mustard for a pre-race snooze! There will only be about 500 runners for this race. I love the small races. You get to know so many people who are there just to soak it all in. This will be a dramatic difference when I run Chicago in October with 40,000 people. Simply Amazing!

Enjoy today and look forward to tomorrow. If you love someone don't forget to tell them TODAY! Tomorrow is not soon enough and will be another opportunity to tell them AGAIN!!!

Put your hands in the air when you dance the next time. You may ask why, but it will make you smile!!!

Go make a difference in your life...You will be surprised how many people will benefit along the way!

Come run with me,

Zig Ziglar once said, "You will get what you want in life, if you help enough people get what they want!!!"

Hello Guys and Gals!!!

I wanted to share something with you that my daughter Katie has had hanging on our refrigerator since the end of school. Call me Mr. Observant, but today was the first day I took time to stop an read it. There was a picture of a boomerang. Inside of this colorful boomerang she had drawn, written were the words: trust, listening, honest, truthful, being kind to others and obey. Her teacher had written at the bottom of the picture, "You have been an inspiration for our class this year! You are a joy to have in class!" Signed Miss Mitchell. The little things in life that make such a big difference...If all of us were to take these attributes and use them everyday, how wonderful the world would be. The point of the boomer rang, if not obvious, was if we treat others this way, these wonderful things will come back to us from other people. It is true that sometimes we treat others nicely and we get treated badly in return. We learn by our mistakes and these individuals unfortunately end up not being our friends or people we aspire to be like as we grow up and move on in our lives. That doesn't mean for one second we should stop being who we are. We should continue to love, trust, listen, be honest, be kind and be truthful in what we say and do everyday. This makes us a person we can be proud to be and others will be proud of as well. We all must develop these good habits. I would be the first to admit that I could use some work on developing my good habits. Habits have a way of taking control of our lives and we start doing them without ever thinking. That's why it is so important to develop good habits and it takes an even extra effort sometimes to break bad habits.

I want to thank my daughter Katie for her picture she left on the refrigerator and the inspiration. Something so small that means so much!!!

Continue to give to others and expect nothing in return. When you least expect it someone will give back to you when you need it the most!!!

Don't stop loving! Even if your heart gets broke. Like the ole' saying goes....If at first you don't succeed, try try again!!!

Run often, run hard and run with purpose!!!

Having it All!!!

Hello Sports fans!!!

This weekend has been baseball Rama!!! My Son Trent who is 9 years old was in a baseball tournament this past week and past weekend. He played 2 games on Saturday and one game today on Sunday. Trent is an average baseball player and because he is smaller than most of the boys on his team, sometimes struggles more than others. Saturday at the game when the boys had to take to the field, Trent was the chosen one that had to sit on the bench. I saw him sitting there in the middle of the bench all by himself. It brought back memories; not so pleasant ones, when I had to sit on the bench. A lot of things go through your mind when your sitting there and you feel like all eyes are on you and thinking why you aren't worthy of being on the field. I got out of the bleachers and went down to take a seat next to my son. Don’t get me wrong, this wasn’t an act of heroism on my part; I was just feeling bad for my son. I starting talking to Trent about the game and trying my best to be as fun as possible and take his mind off of any bad feelings he might be having. Then we sat for several minutes just watching the game. In a moment of silence, my son put his arm around my shoulder and just sat there saying nothing. I could have almost cried. He was telling me so much without saying a word. Whether it was thank you, I love you, I appreciate you being here; it didn’t matter, because I was trying to cheer up my son and he just had made me the happiest Dad in the world!!!!

Today at church Trent was sitting next to me. I have been having some obstacles in my life and have to admit maybe I wasn’t the most chipper I have been in quite some time. During a pause in the priest sermon, Trent put his had on my lap and looked up at me and said, “Anything the matter Dad?” In is own special way he was asking me what was wrong? I grabbed his hand and gave it a squeeze and told him that everything was just fine. Isn’t it amazing how hard we work to teach our children everything we know and sometimes are very critical of them every time they make a mistake? It was on this weekend that I have come to realize from my son Trent, how much I can learn from him. He is one of the most loving, caring and trusting individuals I have ever met. He wants my love so much and gives me a lot more than sometimes I deserve. As I reflect on these special moments this weekend I have come to realize that I really have it all. If you have children who love you, care for you and teach you; you really do have it all!!!

I did an 8 mile run today that I felt really good about. I am getting excited already for my Idaho race in 4 weeks! My brother reminded me today how lucky we are to have the health and ability to run. There are so many people who are less fortunate in this world, we all need to wake up everyday and be so thankful for all the gifts in our life!

Keep giving and you will receive more than you have every dreamed!!!

The one who runs the fastest finishes first!

Soar Like An Eagle!!!

Hello Everyone!

I am hopeful everyone is getting the most out of your summer! Whether it is swimming, white-water rafting, travelling, going to the zoo, visiting your relatives or just relaxing and enjoying your family; I want you to enjoy every ounce of your summer!!!!

I have a 5 mile run to put in today and I am excited about a new running group that I will join tomorrow for a 5 mile run. They meet every Saturday and run between 5 and 10 miles and then go to the local St. Louis Bread Company for some carbs and drinks. I am looking forward to this new adventure. I have usually ran alone, but joining a group can help motivate you to run, can increase your pace time and can also introduce you to people just like you who love to run!!!

I have recently read something that I found very inspirational. It is an explanation of how a mother eagle must have the courage to push her infants out of the nest to learn how to fly. This excerpt from a book I read can be interpreted many ways and motivate you to do different things. A quote from David McNally in the book called, "The Push"..."Until they learned how to soar they would fail to understand the privilege it was to have been born and eagle." Everyday day most of us are very fortunate to wake up with health, energy and God-given talent. We are privileged that we have all these glorious things the Lord has given us. It is up to us to use these talents to make our families, children, careers and our relationships flourish! Let us all try to remind ourselves everyday that we have the ability to SOAR!!! We all will face adversity in our lives. It's not a matter of if, but when. Reach down deep in to your soul and know that it will be scary, frightening and even very difficult. Know you have been born an "eagle" and you do have the ability and the right to SOAR!

David McNally writes, "Why does the thrill of soaring have to begin with the fear of falling?" Excellence comes with risk, caring, dreaming and expecting more than others think is wise. Today is your day!!! Know that you have the ability, the heart and the determination to live an extraordinary life!

I pray that all of you soar like an eagle!!!

Did you let out the Monster today?!!!

Hello AMERICA!

I have dove back into my training and have only 5 weeks before the Mesa Falls Marathon in Ashton, IA. I have never done two marathons this close together so I am anxious to see how my body will perform! This past Sunday I ran Missoula, MT and by Wednesday this week I started out with 30 minutes on the elliptical trainer and 30 minutes of weight lifting. Today I put in a 3 mile run. I truly miss when I go several days without running. Exercise in general for most people gives us a great feeling of accomplishment and provides us with some extra energy along the way. My kids have a saying that they use when I run marathon's. They tell me when I get close to the finish line that I should, "Let the Monster out." They have seen me grit my teeth, clutch my fist and turn up the speed when I get close to the finish. They say I look like a monster coming across the finish line. The "letting out the monster" gives me that extra boost sometimes I need to cross the finish and perhaps pass a few runners who I have been behind the whole race! Everyday we get up, get dressed, eat breakfast, go to our jobs, come home, eat dinner, go to bed. I don't want to sound mundane, but we can let life become that way if we don't go after what we want ever day with passion and zest!!! My brother says to do something everyday that scares you. You know you are being challenged and taking risk if you do things that scare you. This is also how I found to build character and gain experience. If you do something you are scared to do, but you do it anyway and accomplish the tasks successfully; you have gain experience and more often then not, some character along the way. Make sure you are getting the most out of every day! The compilation of all the days end up to be....guess what? Your life!!! Get the most out of it!! Make sure sometime during the day you "Let out the Monster!" You want to get the most out of your day and certainly in the end the most out of your life!!!!

Love, trust, forgive and live!!!

Never pass up an opportunity to be great!!!

Hello Runners, Friends, Family and All Star Fans!!!

Yesterday I completed my 10th marathon and my 9th state that I have run a marathon in. It is awesome to have hit double digits with marathons I have run! Missoula Montana puts on an awesome marathon. For those of you considering a great place to travel and a marathon well done; this is a great one to put on your list. From the moment I arrived, Missoula offers a lot to the average visitor. The airport was only 2 minutes away from my hotel. The hotel offers 24/7 shuttle service which I utilized several times during my trip. I would like to say a big THANK YOU to the folks at the Hawthorn Inn. Not only were they very nice and cordial, but anything you asked for it was delivered in a matter of minutes. The day of the race my brother and I left the hotel at 4:15am. The hotel had put together a bag with a bagel, yogurt, apple and orange juice for us to take with us. For those of you who don’t travel much, most hotels if you are not up before breakfast is served, you just simply miss breakfast. The Hawthorn definitely gets a 5 star for customer service! The temperature at the start of the race was around 55° F. Perfect for the start of a marathon. The course was very flat with the exception of one monster hill around mile 11. It could have been classified as a small mountain. Once we were able to master the mountain it was a battle of endurance to the finish. My brother and I were suppose to start the race together but do to a bathroom break I had to take I had forgotten to turn on my GPS watch. The gun went off and I stayed behind the start line for the satellite to load on my watch. My brother took off and thought I was seconds behind him. I only started the race a minute and half later. I caught up with my brother Kyle about mile 2 and ran with him until about mile 5. He then started running faster and I didn’t see him again until mile 22. He was about 100 yards in front of me. I knew if I kept him in my sites and did not fall more than 100yds behind, that I would beat his time because of my delayed start. Kyle unfortunately did not factor my late start in because unbeknownst to him I had waited over a minute to start the race. Kyle tried to keep me at bay and I did my very best to push myself although fatigue was setting in at an enormous level. I sprinted the last 100 yards and was only about 25 yards behind my brother when I crossed the finish line. I knew I had beaten his time. A few minutes later he was talking about how he was able to beat me in this race. I let him know about my late start and then the shock set in right then and there that I had beat him by approximately 1 minute. He couldn’t believe it. It was most definitely a, “you could have heard a pin drop” moment!! I am not very fast or do not ever brag about beating someone in a race. On this day, it was okay because it was my younger brother and I had just out foxed him in this 26.2 challenge of endurance! I love you bro! I smoked you, but I love ya!

Remember everyday to thank the people for the little things in your life. I thanked the race organizers, the hotel staff and the shuttle driver. Just giving your kids a call when you are away is an opportunity for you to do something great. It is not the “great” that you may think of, but it is the “great “ that allows you the opportunity to do something that is right there in front of you, and you just have to put forth that little effort to make a difference in someone’s life. Don’t pass up an opportunity to tell someone you love that you love them. Don’t pass up an opportunity to say thanks, hold a door open or make someone smile who might be having a rough day.

Good luck to the National League tomorrow in the All Star Game! Go Albert Puhols! You are an ambassador of good will and a wonderful role model for millions of children watching.

Go after the things you want in life no matter what it takes!! Make good choices, don’t be afraid of a challenge or obstacles in your way and love with all your heart!

After being in Montana for the weekend, I think it’s only appropriate that I use one of my old sayings….If you’re gonna be bear…Be a GRIZZLY!!!!

Growing Up In A Small Town; How Sweet It Is!!!

Good Day Everyone!

I went for a 3 mile run this morning. I have a 4 miler tomorrow and that's it before 26.2 Large on Sunday in Montana! As I headed out of my subdivision for a lap down heartbreak hill and back; I noticed a man in a wheelchair on the sidewalk on the other side of the street. I try not to ever complain about the miles I must put in to train for a marathon, but on this particular day I said a prayer as I went by the man in the wheelchair. How fortunate I was to have my health and be able to run. The man was a lot older than me. I thought about all the things that he may have done in his life and now he was watching me and most probably wishing he was able to run just one more time. We all take for granted so many things in our lives. The people we meet, the things we are able to do and the places we are able to go. I too will be older one day, what will I be doing when I am 75? I hope I will be running and sharing another story with you!!!

Growing up in a small town you learn many things. You learn how to work hard and you learn the value of a dollar. You learn to trust people by there word. They mean what they say and they say what they mean. That's all you have to go on, and that word is as good as gold. If someone tells you they will pay you next week for a job you did today; you trust that you will get paid. If someone tells you that they will mow your yard when your gone for a week; you trust that it will get done. If someone tells you they will paint your house because you let them hunt on your farm; you trust that your house will get painted. Trust. How little of a word that means so much and can hurt so badly when it is broken. Then there is another attribute that we need to possess that is also very important. That is forgiveness. When someone hurts us we must forgive them and continue our friendship and/or, our love for them. The world must forgive in order to grow stronger. People must forgive and trust in order to grow stronger and live longer. I myself am learning how to build upon both of these very important qualities. I grew up in a small town of 411 people. I learned how to work hard. I learned how to love with all my heart do to my dear mother. I learned how to trust. Now I am learning how to forgive...

Be thankful for what you have in your life. Make new friends and never forget how to trust and forgive. Never forget how to love with all your heart. One day we will all be older and we will look back and reflect on all the things we did and left behind. I pray that I will look back and smile for the journey I have taken; although not without difficulty or mishap, was a fruitful and fulfilled life that touched many people positively along the way!!!

Run because you can. Smile because you can. Love because you can!

To all those marathoners...."Hard training, easy combat; easy training, hard combat." (Marshal Suvorov, Russian General)

Sandbox Wisdom; fun, refreshing , and possibly life changing!

Hello family friends and fellow marathoners!!!

I am only six days away from my Montana Marathon and getting very excited! Just the thought of beating my brother in another race puts a big smile on my face. :) I will be preparing this week to go 26 miles and 385 yards! I have always known to hydrate, eat the appropriate amounts of carbohydrates and protein, but I have never known much about iron. Iron is necessary for producing hemoglobin in your red blood cells. This gives your muscles energy and allows you to perform aerobically. This is very important for running performance. Many athletes over the years have given themselves iron by illegal means to enhance performance. For you and I the best means of getting the appropriate iron is to eat the following foods: Liver, lean meat, oysters, egg yolk, ,dark green leafy vegetables, legumes, dried fruit and whole-grained or enriched cereals and bread. Drink the right amount of fluids and eat the appropriate foods and you will go the distance in style!!! Train hard to go long!!!

I was very fortunate to be able to spend a lot of time with my children this weekend. My son wants to own several video stores and my daughter want to be a fashion designer. I love listening to them dream!!! As children we believe we can do anything. Become the president or own a yacht one day! Sometimes as adults we put fences around our dreams. If we can only take a little bit of our children's creativity and imagination and use it to help us live our dreams, how wonderful life will be! Dream your dreams and most important; live your dreams. Take risk and dare to be different. Hard work and sacrifice may be needed to live your dreams but never give up and never stop dreaming!!! You may win and you may lose; but if you never fail you will not succeed!!! Zig Zigler once said, "The difference between a big shot and a little shot is this...A big shot is a little shot who never stopped shootin!!!".

Remember when you put that first foot on the floor in the morning to thank God for the opportunity to enjoy a wonderful day!!!

The one who runs the fastest finishes first...

Thank God for kids!

Happy 4th of July Everyone! Three cheers for the red, white and blue! Fireworks, barbecue, boating, swimming, picnics and vacation!! Fun, fun, fun!! What if we all took a little bit of the red, white and blue and what it signifies and used it in our everyday life? White-signifies purity and innocence, Red-hardiness & valour, and Blue -signifies vigilance, perseverance and justice. I don't know about anyone else...but I could certainly use a shot of red, white and blue in my life!!!

Someone reminded me the other day that we really only have about 17 years with our children and then they are off to college; out of the nest and starting down the road to their own life. Seems like a lot maybe, but then it seems like, not so much. My children or 9 and 11. That means I have 8 and 6 more years respectively. Like I was saying...not so much.

We all get caught up in our busy lives with work, travel and our own hobbies. Just remember those little snaggletooths at home and how much we mean to them and how precious the time is that we spend with them. Teach them everything we can, love them and take precious care of them and love them some more. There is an old Oak Ridge Boys Song "Thank God for Kids". If you have never heard it, listen to the words. It will make you hold your children tight and thank God for this wonderful blessing in your life. One of the lines in the song is this; "when I look down in those trusted eyes that look to me, I realize, its love that you can't buy...Thank God for kids." Remember the greatest gifts we can give to our children are time and love.

The next time you go for a run, or before or after your run; think about going for a short jog with your kids. Perhaps making a commitment to play with them each day for as much time as you spend running. They love you and support you when you run; make sure you do the same for them!!!

Get what you want out of life. You may have some tough challenges and decisions along the way, but be true to your heart and it will lead you down the right path.

Pop, bang, sizzle....Have fun with those fireworks!!!
